I made a small change to this comic before presenting it. In the last panel, I originally had a tear coming from the trout’s eye. Normally, small things like that don’t seem to make much of a difference. Then I thought about how Jessica and I talked about adopting and how we would want any adopted child to feel happy rather than sad when they found out – surprised, maybe, but not sad. I also thought of people I knew – relatives and friends – who have adopted or been adopted and it didn’t seem kosher to have the fish cry. Sure, the gag still works with him surprised, but I think he’d be happy, as any fish would be.
