You may think that his feature was inspired by the song “Fish Heads” by Barnes and Barnes back in the 80s, but you would be wrong. I was inspired by H-E-B.
If you’re not familiar with H-E-B, I feel sorry for you. It is THE BEST grocery store chain on the face of the planet! I believe they’re only in Texas so… sorry everywhere else. In any case, whenever I go to H-E-B with Bash, he wants to see the “fish with the red eyes.” By that, he means the Red Snapper. He makes the ASL sign for fish and gestures around his eyes to tell me that he wants to go see them. Here’s a pic I took of the fish display at H-E-B.
As you can clearly see, the fish still have their heads. They had a flounder one day and I made a joke to Jessica about how I’d like to get the flounder and ask it how its mermaid friend was doing right before biting into it. I’d bite right into its weird both-eyes-on-one-side-of-its-face head! Well, maybe not, but you can imagine…
