“Your Coffee Break Paper”

“One Lump or Two” (OLOT) was not a zine when I started it back in late 2003. It was a humorous newsletter of sorts yet I didn’t have any news in it. I had the idea of a publication with all the fun stuff from a newspaper (comics, columns, etc.) with none of the news to bring you down. Also, I needed some filler around my comic strip “Perk at Work” – I wanted to share it but didn’t know how.

Interesting side notes: I played around with a way to publish my comic strip online alongside a little calendar with links to previous posts but abandoned it because I thought no one would go for it. Silly me. Had I done at least five minutes of research, I would have realized that webcomics were starting to pop up. I could’ve jumped in early. Oh, well.

In any case, I tried my hand at writing humor columns and various miscellany in a newsletter format, exported it in a PDF, and sent it to friends and family. It started out as one page and then grew. Eventually, I collected a week’s worth and printed it in a zine.

At one point, I (halfheartedly) tried to sell advertising, but a publication with little clout and a minuscule circulation doesn’t attract buyers. Live and learn.

Regardless, I’m happy I produced OLOT. It was immensely fun and I learned a ton in the process. Also, it got me a much-needed job… but that’s a story for another time. For now, grab a cup of coffee with “One Lump or Two.”
